Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon and Alloy Steel Mechanical Tubing
ASTM A519 Tubing is made from Alloy Steel under ASTM A519 specification which also covers several grades of carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing, either hot-finished or cold-finished piping products. The steel used in the mechanical tubing may be cast in ingots or may be strand cast. When steel of different grades is sequentially strand cast, identification of the resultant transition material is required. The seamless tubing is a tubular product made without a welded seam. It is usually manufactured by hot working steel, and if necessary, by subsequently cold finishing the hot-worked tubular product to produce the desired shape, dimensions and properties. ASTM A519 Cold Drawn Seamless tubes shall be furnished in the following shapes: round, square, rectangular and special sections. Heat analysis shall be made to determine the percentages of the elements specified. If secondary melting processes are used, the heat analysis shall be obtained from one remelted ingot or the product of one remelted ingot of each primary melt. This results in the A519 tubing having an increased strength, as well as an enhanced machinability. A519 tubing is essentially a mechanical type of tubing and this is mainly selected for use, in applications where there is a demand for a smooth finish, certain very specific physical properties or close tolerances.

Carbon steel is a large category of steel that encompasses many varying chemical compositions. Each type of carbon steel requires different considerations when welding. For example if you choose Low carbon steel to weld which is typically the most readily welded steel in a room temperature environment. These low carbon steel suitable for welding include C1008, C1018, A36, A1011 and A500. Medium carbon steel such as C1045 typically requires preheat and post-heat treatment to avoid weld cracking. High carbon steel is even more prone to weld cracking than the other two groups of carbon steel. Welding high carbon steel will most likely require very thorough preheating and post-heating processes to avoid this. It could also require special welding filler metals.
