AISI 4130 Pipe

4130 Seamless Alloy Steel Tubing

4130 Pipe Material

4130 Chromoly Steel

AISI 4130 material properties is that it has a Chemical Composition of Iron, Fe 97.03 – 98.22, Carbon, C 0.280 – 0.330, Sulfur, S 0.040, Chromium, Cr 0.80 – 1.10, Molybdenum, Mo 0.15 – 0.25, Manganese, Mn 0.40 – 0.60, Phosphorous, P 0.035 and Silicon, Si 0.15 – 0.30. AISI 4130 has a Melting Point of 2610 °F (1432 °C) and a Density of 0.284 lb/in³ (7.85 g/cm3.) The Thermal Conductivity (100 °C) of AISI 4130 is 296 BTU in/hr.ft2. °F (42.7 W/mK). AISI 4130 has an Elongation at Break (in 50 mm) of 21.50% and a Poissons Ratio of 0.27-0.30.

AISI 4130 high pressure pipe application are many and a couple of the major application areas are welded tubing and aircraft engine mounts. AISI 4130 is also used in various other industries such as hydraulics, structural, bearings, petrochemicals, automobile, mechanical, etc. AISI 4130 is also used in the manufacture of roller bearings and ball bearings. Because of its heat treatment properties, AISI 4130 is used in gear manufacturing and also in rock-crushing machinery. AISI 4130 is also used in milling cutters, taps, drills and various other types of cutter tools. One of the major uses of AISI 4130 is in resistance welding.

4130 chromoly tubing welding is used a lot by many applications such as aerospace, motorsports, sporting goods, etc. Chromoly tubing gives a superb blend of ductility, weight and strength. Chromoly tubing is the 4130 grade of chrome-moly and as such it is what is known as an HSLA (high-strength low-alloy). As the carbon content in 4130 chromoly is relatively low, it bends, machines and welds very easily. 4130 chromoly gives a better elongation, as well as a better strength-to-weight ratio. One can easily recognize a good weld by 4130 chromoly, as it will have a bluish tint and it will appear shiny.

AISI 4130 Pipe is a low alloy steel which contain molybdenum and chromium as strengthening agents. We can supply & stock 4130 Pipe material including AISI 4130 Pipes, 4130 Tubing, 4130 Flanges, 4130 Pipes Fittings, 4130 Elbow etc. The carbon content is nominally 0.30% and with this relatively low carbon content the alloy is excellent from the fusion weldability standpoint. These Low alloy 4130 Seamless Pipe can be hardened by heat treatment. Typical applications for 4130 low alloy steel include structural use such as aircraft engine mounts and welded tubing applications.

4130 Round tube is a high tensile grade of steel that contains chromium and molybdenum, and as a result this grade is often referred to as chromoly steel, chrome-moly, CrMo, CRMO, CR-MOLY. AISI 4130 Tubing contains an excellent strength to weight ratio and is considerably stronger and harder than standard carbon steels.

The material is not as easily weldable compared to other materials such as BS4 T45 to BS5 T100 or 15CDV6 (1.7734) as it requires pre and post weld heat treatment to avoid cold cracking. It is also unadvisable to weld Chromoly to other carbon steel grades due to the differences in chemical construction. It can be achieved but particular attention to vital stress areas and heat affected zones most be made.

Examples of applications for 4130 steel include aerospace and defence structures, bicycle frames, tubes for transportation of pressurised gases, clutch and flywheel components, and roll cage and chassis construction in particular drag racing and other American regulated classifications.

Carbon steel is a large category of steel that encompasses many varying chemical compositions. Each type of carbon steel requires different considerations when welding. For example if you choose Low carbon steel to weld which is typically the most readily welded steel in a room temperature environment. These low carbon steel suitable for welding include C1008, C1018, A36, A1011 and A500. Medium carbon steel such as C1045 typically requires preheat and post-heat treatment to avoid weld cracking. High carbon steel is even more prone to weld cracking than the other two groups of carbon steel. Welding high carbon steel will most likely require very thorough preheating and post-heating processes to avoid this. It could also require special welding filler metals.

AISI 4130 Pipe welding is used extensively for pipe welding, aerospace, aviation, biomedical implants, fabrication of race cars, choppers, etc.
